The first day we walked around and explored St. John and then had a yummy Mexican dinner.
The next morning we were off on a
whalewatching adventure. We drove for 45 mins, then hopped aboard an 1 1/2 hour ferry to Grand Manan Island. If any of you ever have the chance, this is a very special and beautiful island. Soph was a superstar on the ferry, and luckily for us there were lots of little kids to entertain her for the
ride. After pondering what five hours would be like with a toddler on a small sailing vessel, Brett suggested that he and Sophie go to the beach for the day while the three of us went on the whalewatching tour. It was breathtaking. We saw Finback whales, Atlantic right whales, harbour porpoises, and a basking shark (VERY close!!). The afternoon was full of these incredible creatures swimming in the waters around our boat. It would have been a 'different' experience if Sophie had been there....Brett definitely made the right decision. (there were only flimsy guy-wires (sp) surrounding the deck of the boat).

enjoyed walking on the beach into several caves during low tide. We then headed to the Fundy Trail, where we did some small hikes to flower pot rocks, as well as to a beautiful waterfall. Sophie did really well on the trails, and enjoyed smelling the flowers along the way. That night we had a
lobster dinner, and Sophie got to pat her first
live lobster (pre its hot bath).
As you can see, Sophie was tuckered out at the end of our hike!

Bean and Nicco were so wonderful about vacationing with a toddler. They were so patient and flexible and it made it really nice for us. The only things that we would change for any future vacations would be the importance of a kitchenette! Eating out with kids isn't always fun/cheap/productive and adding food allergies on top made it even more challenging. Live and learn!! What a beautiful province!

Hi Bear:
Heather here from Kingston :) Your Dad mentioned to me a couple weeks ago that you had gone Whale Watching on Grand Manan. I've been anxiously awaiting your post about it:) "GM" is my stomping ground. Spent weeks there as a child visiting family and still go most vacations when I am home... I look forward to talking to you about it:) email me at hwaddingham@yahoo.com :)
Hi Heather,
Thanks for your comment. GM is such a magical place. I can see why you have spent lots of vacations there--it is like another world. Unfortunately I didn't get to see too much of it because we were only there for the day, and spent almost all of it on the sailboat. But definitely long enough to know that I can't wait to go back. :) :)
