This year Kathy and Chris' church is participating in "Operation Christmas Child", where people all over take a shoe box and fill it with presents for kids all over the world. Inside the box are tags that say 'boy' or 'girl (which the feminist in me finds problemmatic, but let's move on) with different age groups.
We were at their church on Sunday and picked up a shoebox for our family. We have decided to buy for a 14 year old boy somewhere on this globe. I'm really excited about this.
Here are some brainstormed ideas--
flip flops
sports t-shirt and baseball hat
hand-held video game (like Tetris or something) with extra batteries
candy (cause let's face it, what kid doesn't like candy!)
some kind of small ball
solar powered calulator
comic book
digital watch (with extra batteries)
harmonica or other small musical instrument
For all those of you who have a 14 year old boy in your life (or who have had one!) I would love any other suggestions.
I stumbled upon this poem this morning--thought I'd share it....
A Prayer for ChildrenWe pray for childrenWho sneak popsicles before supper.Who erase holes in math workbooks.Who can never find their shoes. And we pray for thosewho stare at photographers from behind
barbed wire, who can't bound down the street in a new
pair of sneakers, who never 'counted potatoes'.Who are born in places we would never be
caught dead in,Who never saw a circus,Who live in an X-rated world...We pray for childrenwho bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,Who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money. And we pray for those who never get dessert, who have no security blanket to drag behind them.Who watch their parents watch them die,Who can't find any bread to steal,Who don't have any rooms to clean up,Whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser,Whose monsters are real...We pray for childrenwho spend all their allowance before TuesdayWho throw tantrums in the grocery store
and pick at their food, who like ghost stories, who shove their dirty clothes under the bedand never rinse out the tub,who get visits from the tooth fairy, who don't like to be kissed in front of the school bus,who squirm in church or temple and scream into the phone, whose tears we can sometimes laugh atand whose smiles can make us cry.And we pray for those whose nightmares come in
daytime, who will eat anything, who have never been to a dentist, who aren't spoiled by anybody,Who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep, who live and move, but have no being...We pray for children who want to be carried, and for those who never get a second chance. For those we smotherand for those who will grab the hand of anybodykind enough to offer it.-Author Unknown
